Construction is underway on a series of upgrades to the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex, supported by more than $600,000 in funding from the Ontario government.

The project will modernize several areas of the existing recreation facility, including change rooms, showers, washrooms, entrances, concession areas and customer service counters.

The provincial funding is being provided through Ontario's Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF), a $500 million program supporting the repair, rehabilitation and construction of sport and recreation facilities across the province.

Ontario Newsroom reports that Construction on the East Gwillimbury project is expected to be completed by March 2027.

    Renovations Underway Throughout Sports Complex

The East Gwillimbury Sports Complex project involves improvements to several heavily used areas of the facility rather than a single renovation.

The construction scope includes comprehensive upgrades to:

    • Change rooms
    • Showers
    • Washrooms
    • Building entrances
    • Customer service counters
    • Concession counters
    • Other facility amenities

The work is intended to modernize the existing complex while improving accessibility and the overall functionality of the building.

Because renovations will extend across several different parts of the facility, the project could require coordination among multiple interior construction trades as work progresses.

Accessibility Is Major Part of Renovation

Accessibility improvements are an important component of the project.

Building entrances and other areas throughout the complex are being upgraded to create a more accessible recreation facility.

The renovations to change rooms, washrooms, showers and service counters could also involve modifications to layouts, fixtures and finishes to better accommodate people with disabilities.

Mayor Virginia Hackson said the improvements are intended to make the facility more welcoming and accessible for all residents, regardless of disability status.

For contractors, the accessibility work could involve new doors and hardware, entrance modifications, accessible plumbing fixtures, washroom partitions, counters, signage and other building components.

Customer Service and Concession Areas to Be Upgraded

The construction program also includes improvements to the Sports Complex's customer service and concession counters.

These spaces could require a combination of millwork, cabinetry, countertops, electrical, plumbing, lighting and interior finishing work as part of the modernization program.

Concession-area improvements may also require coordination with food-service equipment and supporting mechanical and electrical systems, depending on the final scope.

The work adds another commercial interior component to the broader recreation facility renovation.

More Than $600,000 in Provincial Funding

Ontario is contributing more than $600,000 toward the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex upgrades through the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund.

The project falls under the provincial program's effort to repair and modernize existing recreation infrastructure.

CSRIF provides funding through two streams:

    • Stream 1 supports the repair and upgrading of existing sport and recreation facilities.
    • Stream 2 supports the construction of new and transformative sport and recreation facilities.

The East Gwillimbury project is focused on renovating and improving the existing Sports Complex.

    Construction Trades Involved

With construction now underway, the renovation could involve a variety of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers specializing in recreation facilities and commercial interior improvements.

    Potential trades include:

    • General renovation contractors
    • Selective demolition contractors
    • Concrete and masonry contractors
    • Accessibility improvement contractors
    • Door, frame and hardware contractors
    • Carpentry contractors
    • Architectural millwork contractors
    • Cabinetry and countertop contractors
    • Drywall and insulation contractors
    • Plumbing contractors
    • Mechanical contractors
    • HVAC contractors
    • Electrical contractors
    • Fire protection contractors
    • Washroom partition contractors
    • Plumbing fixture suppliers and installers
    • Shower equipment contractors
    • Flooring contractors
    • Ceramic tile contractors
    • Painting contractors
    • Ceiling contractors
    • Lighting contractors and suppliers
    • Concession equipment contractors
    • Signage contractors
    • Interior finishing contractors

The combination of washroom, shower, change room, entrance and service-counter renovations makes the project particularly relevant to contractors specializing in institutional and recreation facility upgrades.

    Completion Expected by March 2027

Work is already underway, with construction expected to be completed by March 2027.

The relatively short construction schedule means multiple areas of the complex may need to be coordinated carefully as renovations move forward.

Once completed, the project will provide East Gwillimbury with upgraded change rooms, showers, washrooms, entrances and customer service and concession areas within the existing recreation complex.

    Ontario Expands Recreation Infrastructure Program

The East Gwillimbury project is part of a much larger provincial investment in sport and recreation construction.

Ontario's Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund has grown to $500 million following an additional $300 million investment announced in the 2026 Ontario Budget.

The first round of the program has already supported almost 100 projects across the province, including construction of 17 new facilities and repairs and upgrades to 77 existing facilities.

Applications are currently being accepted for the next CSRIF intake through December 22, 2026, at 4 p.m. EST.

That continued funding could create additional opportunities for general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and design professionals as municipalities and other eligible organizations move forward with recreation facility construction and renovation projects across Ontario.

For East Gwillimbury, the more than $600,000 provincial investment is already moving into active construction, with the upgraded Sports Complex targeted for completion in March 2027.
