$242.5 Million Road & Bridge Projects Proposed for Kane County
Five major Illinois Department of Transportation projects totaling more than $242.5 million are planned for the Kane County area as part of the state's Rebuild Illinois infrastructure program.
The projects are scheduled to begin between spring and summer 2027 and include major roadway reconstruction, intersection improvements, culvert work, bridge replacement and noise wall construction.
Kane County Connects reports that work will be concentrated along several important Kane County transportation corridors, including Illinois 47, Illinois 25 and U.S. 20. Depending on the project, construction is expected to continue through 2027, 2028 or as late as 2030.
For contractors and suppliers specializing in heavy highway, bridge and civil construction, the program represents a substantial pipeline of upcoming work beginning next year.
Illinois 47 from Jericho Road to South of Galena Road
IDOT is planning reconstruction of Illinois 47 between Jericho Road and south of Galena Road.
Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2027 and continue through 2028.
One lane of traffic will remain open throughout construction.
The reconstruction could involve substantial roadway work along the corridor, including pavement removal and replacement, grading, drainage improvements and other supporting infrastructure.
Illinois 47 from Cross Street to Jericho Road
A second Illinois 47 reconstruction project will extend from Cross Street to Jericho Road.
Work is expected to begin in spring 2027 and be completed in 2028.
As with the section to the north, IDOT plans to maintain one lane of traffic during construction.
Together, the two Illinois 47 projects represent a significant amount of reconstruction activity along a corridor experiencing continued development and increasing traffic demand.
Maintaining traffic while rebuilding the roadway will also require extensive construction staging, temporary pavement, signage and traffic-control operations.
Illinois 25 Intersection and Culvert Improvements
Improvements are planned along Illinois 25 at May Lane, Courier Avenue and Seminary Road.
The project will include:
- Intersection improvements
- Roadway channelization
- Culvert replacement
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2027 and be completed by fall 2027, making it the shortest-duration project of the five.
One lane of traffic will remain open throughout construction.
The culvert replacement will add an underground drainage component to the roadway and intersection work, requiring excavation and coordination with the surrounding pavement improvements.
U.S. 20 Bridge Replacement
The longest project in the Kane County program will take place along U.S. 20 from Illinois 31 to east of Grace Street.
IDOT plans to replace a bridge along this section of the corridor.
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 and continue through 2030.
One lane of traffic will remain open during the project.
With work expected to span approximately four construction seasons, the bridge replacement could create longer-term opportunities for heavy civil contractors, bridge specialists and construction material suppliers.
Traffic staging will be particularly important because IDOT intends to maintain vehicle access through the corridor while the bridge work proceeds.
U.S. 20 Noise Wall Construction
A second U.S. 20 project will extend from west of Randall Road to east of Shales Parkway.
The project will involve construction of new noise walls along the corridor.
Work is anticipated to begin in spring 2027 and be completed in 2028.
One lane of traffic will remain open throughout construction.
Noise wall construction can involve foundation drilling or concrete foundations, precast wall panels, structural supports, site grading and restoration work depending on the final design and site conditions.
Construction Trades Involved
The five Kane County projects cover several areas of heavy civil construction, creating potential opportunities for contractors, subcontractors and suppliers including:
- General highway contractors
- Bridge construction contractors
- Roadway reconstruction contractors
- Excavation and earthwork contractors
- Grading contractors
- Asphalt paving contractors
- Asphalt suppliers
- Concrete contractors
- Reinforcing steel contractors
- Bridge demolition contractors
- Structural steel contractors
- Bridge deck contractors
- Culvert contractors
- Storm sewer and drainage contractors
- Underground utility contractors
- Noise wall contractors
- Drilling and foundation contractors
- Precast concrete manufacturers and installers
- Aggregate and stone suppliers
- Curb and gutter contractors
- Roadway shoulder contractors
- Pavement marking contractors
- Traffic control contractors
- Traffic signal and electrical contractors
- Roadway signage contractors
- Guardrail and safety barrier contractors
- Landscaping and restoration contractors
Because one lane of traffic is expected to remain open on all five projects, traffic-control and construction-staging contractors could play an especially important role throughout the program.
Construction Begins in 2027
All five projects are currently scheduled to enter construction in 2027, creating a concentrated period of infrastructure activity across Kane County.
Three projects are expected to begin in the spring: the Illinois 47 reconstruction from Cross Street to Jericho Road, the Illinois 25 intersection and culvert improvements, and the U.S. 20 bridge replacement.
Noise wall construction along U.S. 20 is also anticipated to begin in spring 2027.
Reconstruction of Illinois 47 from Jericho Road to south of Galena Road is expected to begin in summer 2027.
The Illinois 25 project is scheduled to finish first, with completion anticipated in fall 2027. The two Illinois 47 projects and the U.S. 20 noise wall project are expected to continue into 2028, while the U.S. 20 bridge replacement will extend through 2030.
Rebuild Illinois Continues Statewide Infrastructure Investment
The Kane County projects are part of Rebuild Illinois, the state's $33.2 billion infrastructure investment program supporting transportation improvements across Illinois.
The program extends beyond roads and bridges to include transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
Through its seventh year, Rebuild Illinois has funded $25.6 billion in improvements statewide, including work covering 24,498 miles of highways, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
For Kane County's construction industry, the five upcoming projects represent more than $242.5 million in planned transportation work.
With construction beginning across multiple sites in 2027 and some projects continuing through 2030, the program provides a multi-year pipeline of opportunities for highway, bridge, drainage, concrete, paving, noise wall and traffic-control contractors and suppliers.
